The Importance of Sleep

As humans age, the requirement of sleep seems to grow farther away from a place of importance. Of course, it is valued and seen as a haven from reality, but there are times when individuals think that only a few hours would last them through the day. It is this mindset that negatively impacts one’s lifestyle. Sleep deficiency, a condition that makes someone lack sleep, sleep at the wrong time of day, or just not sleep in general, is prominent in many people, especially scholars that worry very much about coursework (NHLBI). The various benefits of obtaining an appropriate amount of sleep is quite plentiful. For example, one can notice that sometimes when another person does not get enough sleep for a certain amount of time, then that person can get aggressive and moody. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute states, “If you're sleep deficient, you may have trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling your emotions and behavior, and coping with change.” This means that all aspects of life, such as learning and physical health are compromised. One becomes less focused and can find themself constantly nodding off and losing attention. It is recommended for people to sleep around eight to nine hours every night. Although there is a saying that adults need less sleep, it is better to get more hours because the process of sleep also removes waste from the brain.
